Planning a Beach Trip With Your Dog
How to find beaches that actually allow dogs, what to pack and how to keep your dog safe in sun, sand and surf.
Check that dogs are allowed
- Many US beaches ban dogs entirely or only allow them in certain seasons or hours. A beach being public does not mean dogs are permitted.
- PetUnited labels each beach's dog access separately and links the official rules page when one exists.
Safety on the sand
- Bring fresh water — dogs that drink seawater can get sick.
- Hot sand burns paws; visit in the morning or evening.
- Rinse salt and sand from your dog's coat after the visit, and watch for rip currents if your dog swims.
