How to Choose a Truly Pet-Friendly Hotel
The questions to ask before you book so the pet fee, weight limit and house rules don't surprise you at check-in.
Pet-friendly is not one rule
- Even within one hotel brand, pet policies are set property by property. A brand that welcomes pets at one location may have a weight limit or fee at another.
- PetUnited only lists hotels whose own official page states that pets are welcome, and links that page on every card.
Questions to ask the hotel
- What is the pet fee — per night or per stay — and is there a deposit?
- Is there a weight or size limit, and how many pets are allowed per room?
- Which species are accepted? Some hotels welcome only dogs.
- Can my pet be left alone in the room, and must they be crated?
- Is there a grassy relief area nearby, and are pets allowed in the lobby or restaurant?
At check-in
- Mention your pet at the front desk so housekeeping knows. Hang the do-not-disturb sign when your pet is in the room alone, if allowed.
- Bring a lint roller and an old sheet for the bed to avoid cleaning charges.
